Questions Jesus Asked #50

Matthew 24:45-46 – “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.”  NIV

Jesus is finishing answering His disciples’ questions about the destruction of the Temple and the end of the age – two separate events. He has given several prophetic signs and warnings that will indicate that these events are about to happen. The prophecies about the destruction of the Temple were fulfilled in 70 A.D.  Many of the prophecies about “the end of the age” if not most of them have been fulfilled by now. Individuals keep indicating that Jesus will return soon. Some even predict a date. It’s obvious that the “end of the age” is nearer now than it was when Jesus spoke these words.

I keep focusing on a couple of statements that He made during this discourse and this question. The statements are:

  • “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36 – NIV)
  • “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” (Matthew 24:42 – NIV)

None of us know when God the Father will declare “time” for planet earth and send Jesus back. Those of us who follow Him just need to be about His business when He returns. Jesus asks, Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?”  Jesus answers His own question by describing as “faithful and wise servant” as one who distributes food to their household at the proper time. What kind of food is He talking about?  Well, in John 4 when Jesus and the Disciples stopped at the well in Sychar, Samaria, Jesus told the Disciples that he had food and describes it this way:

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”  (John 4:34-35 – NIV)

Jesus’ servants still know that the fields are ripe for harvest, and they are still working in those fields. Some of His servants know that it is important to feed the other servants with spiritual foods that will equip them to work those fields together.  As the Body of Christ we are left here to finish the work of Jesus. Those He finds doing that work when He returns will be rewarded.  In my mind there is a difference between talking about end times and predicting His arrival and being ready to meet Him. I guess that’s why I’m more concerned about the work of the harvest and seeing that it continues than arguing about prophecy which will be fulfilled in God’s time and God’s way.

How can I be that faithful and wise servant?  In what ways do I not act with a sense of urgency with regards to “the harvest?” How can I position myself to better see the potential harvest and where the fields are ripest?
